Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

Special Religious Education (SRE) and Ethics

A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics and faith from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents.

A special religious education (SRE) and Ethics program is available at Pretty Beach Public School and is run by authorised volunteers of approved religious persuasions. This takes place on Monday afternoons between 2:00pm -2:30pm for Years 3-6 and 2:30pm-3:00pm for K-2.

Below is the list of approved SRE programs provided at the school:

1. Combines Christian Education – provided by the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle. Link to curriculum:

2. Catholic Scripture - provided by the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay. Link to curriculum:

3. Primary Ethics- Link to curriculum:

On enrolment at Pretty Beach Public School, the student’s parent/carer will be given the SRE/Ethics participation letter to complete and return to the school (as below). The parent/carer may at any time notify the school in writing that they wish to change their decision. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing.

Students not attending SRE/Ethics will be supervised by PBPS teachers and take part in meaningful activities, such as reading, homework and private studies.
